On episode 98 of the Nurse Keith Show, we’re expanding on episode 91, diving even deeper into the gains being made by nurse practitioners here in the United States. NPs are enjoying an enormous growth spurt as a powerful force within the healthcare system.
Since episode 91 was recorded, new legislation regarding nurse practitioner autonomy was passed in both Oklahoma and South Dakota, and the Veterans Administration, opportunities and job growth for nurse practitioners just keep getting more robust.
The tide has turned for nurse practitioners, folks, and I believe we can thank the VA for some of that movement. I have no doubt that the states are feeling the pressure to up the ante in terms of NP autonomy. We also must make note that CRNAs (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists) did not gain more autonomy within the VA — for now.
So, based on this turning tide, many state legislatures around the US are seeing more and more proposed legislation about NP autonomy and scope of practice.
Did you know that NPs pay a lot of money for physician supervision? How much are these expenditures keeping nurse practitioners from expanding their practices and seeing more patients?
Meanwhile, when states decrease regulation on NPs, it saves the states money because there’s less bureaucracy and red tape to be maintained and managed.
NPs are stepping in to fill the gaps in primary care for underserved populations (especially rural and urban areas).
Again, job growth for NPs between 2017 and 2024 is projected as 31%, as compared to average job growth of 7% across all professions and industries.
Is there full autonomy in your state yet? Need to get involved in those efforts? Get involved with your state legislative process and find out what your state nursing association is up to in this regard.
