Your Nursing Career and the New Year, The Nurse Keith Show, EPS 37

Happy New Year to everyone in the Nurse Keith Nation!

This episode is all about planning and goal-setting. Are you ready for 2016? Are you setting goals and intentions?

Growing your nursing career in 2016For me, the New Year isn’t about resolutions; those are often empty promises made to yourself, and they’re easy to break. Rather, I like setting intentions, crafting SMART goals that I can assess and measure over time, and creating a sense of forward movement, whether it’s in my personal life, my business, or my career.

If you haven’t heard of SMART goals, it’s a useful acronym to help you remember how to set your goals. This acronym stands for:

  • S = Specific
  • M = Measurable
  • A = Achievable
  • R = Realistic
  • T = Time-bound

When you set these types of goals, it’s easy to stop, evaluate your progress and assess how you’re doing, and then come up with a new plan or course of action, which may even include setting a different goal.

Here’s the link to a great blog post by Chris Guillebeau about conducting an annual life review and setting goals for the coming year; it includes a nifty free downloadable spreadsheet that assists you in reviewing your personal and professional life and setting measurable goals for the coming year. Check it out!

For your homework for the first couple of weeks of 2016, I want you to do a few things:

Make a list of several different categories of your life, whether they’re personal or professional. Maybe it’s your self care, exercise, diet, or finances; or maybe you’d like to set goals related to your career.

  • Would you like to find a new job?
  • Would you like to earn a new certification?
  • Are you thinking about going back to school and earning a new degree?
  • Would you like to start a business?
  • Are there personal intentions for self-care, travel, leisure, or wellness that you’d like to set?

If you do have some things you’d like to accomplish, setting SMART goals is an intelligent place to begin.

I want you to stay positive, care for yourself and others, take inspired action in the interest of your career, and tune in again as we explore how to make your nursing career more satisfying than you ever imagined.
